The Valor Rotary Machine

In early 2011 I joined a handful of people, working on what would years later become Nexus Brands Group. One of the first challenging projects I was tasked with, was to work with our industrial designer and bring to market a rotary-style tattoo machine for the TATSoul brand that would crush the competition. Most of the creative direction for both the product design and marketing collateral took inspiration from luxury vehicles. At the time, the best-selling rotary machines were promoting features surrounding motor specifications and performance, so there were a lot of easy parallels. We saw machines as a growing category that supply companies seemed unable to tap into because they weren’t innovating in the ways machine-focused brands and builders were. This machine needed to be different and perform better. After nearly 2 years of design, prototyping, testing and simultaneously developing strong B2B and B2C launch plans. The Valor Rotary hit the tattoo community.

Main selling points of The Valor Rotary Machine included the Patented Magnetic Dampening System that completely eliminated the issue of wear on what is typically a spring-driven mechanism (found in all popular machines of that time). We had successfully engineered a way to create the exact “throw” and “hit” needed for optimal saturation using strategically fixed opposing magnets. Another winning feature was that unlike most all rotary machines at the time, the motor could be removed from The Valor housing for thorough cleaning via autoclave.

Instagram had just launched at the end of 2010 and was beginning to blow up in the tattoo community. I focused on leveraging user-generated content to help promote our machine. The marketing plan I designed included everything from social media giveaways to sending our machines as gifts to influential artists. Postcards promoting The Valor went in every order. Targeted email campaigns were deployed and the machine was promoted heavily at conventions. A piece of the marketing plan was tied to our distribution plan in which multiple domestic and international resellers were secured prior to and post-launch.

Below are samples of digital and print collateral: a catalog spread, instruction manual, landing page, and magazine advertisement focusing on the innovation behind the machine.
